What is SEM?
This question has many answers. One is simple. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is paid advertising through search engines. Most of search engine advertising, especially in the United States, is directed at Google AdWords because it has the most search traffic.
However, this is not the only way to answer the question. Some people in the industry use the term Search Engine Marketing (SEM) as a catch all phrase that represents all online marketing activities. In this view SEM combines SEO with online advertising to maximize your exposure in search engines.
So SEM is either equivalent to paid, online advertising through search engines, or SEM equals online marketing (every tactic).
I view SEM as search engine advertising and SEO as a separate discipline.
My expertise is in combining SEM and SEO along with social media and WordPress website design to create an integrated online marketing plan that grows your business.
- Increased AdWords CTR by 1850% in one month
- Lowered cost-per-click (CPC) by 52% in one month
- Lowered cost per acquisition (CPA) through SEM by more than 100%
- Increased website contacts by 171% using SEM and SEO
I was able to achieve these results for a diverse base of clients by running highly targeted local and international SEM campaigns.
Why You Should Care About SEM
SEM is an integral component of any online marketing plan. While SEO receives more attention as an online marketing tactic (try searching Google for “SEO” and “SEM” and look at the number of results), SEM is equally important.
A major advantage that SEM has over SEO is that SEM allows you to get quicker results. SEO can provide a higher ROI, but it takes time. Depending on your industry and the level of competition it can take months or years to see significant results from SEO campaigns. However, with a little money, keyword research, great content and the right strategy you can start making money with SEM in a few days.
Using SEM as an online marketing tactics also means that you are not wholly dependent on Google’s always changing algorithm. There is a quality component to how much you pay for ads in AdWords that takes the relevance of content into play, but that is beyond the scope of this discussion. Just understand that if you only focus on SEO and Google’s algorithm changes, or a number of competitors up their SEO related spending, you could be left without any traffic for your targeted keywords.
