This question has many answers. One is simple. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is paid advertising through search engines. Most of search engine advertising, especially in the United States, is directed at Google AdWords because it has the most search traffic.

However, this is not the only way to answer the question. Some people in the industry use the term Search Engine Marketing (SEM) as a catch all phrase that represents all online marketing activities. In this view SEM combines SEO with online advertising to maximize your exposure in search engines.

So SEM is either equivalent to paid, online advertising through search engines, or SEM equals online marketing (every tactic).

Why You Should Care About SEM

SEM is an integral component of any online marketing plan. While SEO receives more attention as an online marketing tactic (try searching Google for “SEO” and “SEM” and look at the number of results), SEM is equally important.

A major advantage that SEM has over SEO is that SEM allows you to get quicker results. SEO can provide a higher ROI, but it takes time. Depending on your industry and the level of competition it can take months or years to see significant results from SEO campaigns.
